During the night of 26-27 May 2025, the committed Togolese rapper Aamron, whose real name is Tchala Essowè Narcisse, was arrested at his home in Lomé by plainclothes gendarmes. The arrest, which took place at around 11pm, was carried out without any apparent warrant or due legal process, prompting outrage in Togolese society.
Aamron had recently made some virulent comments on live Tiktok, denouncing the dysfunctions of Togolese society, in particular social inequalities and abuses of power. His criticism of the current regime has won him a growing following among young people and activists.
DMP outraged by AAmron’s arrest
The Dynamique pour la Majorité du Peuple (DMP), a coalition of political parties and players opposed to the regime, has strongly condemned the arrest, describing it as ‘arbitrary, illegal and deeply political’. The DMP stresses that the night-time arrest of Aamron is a clear violation of article 89 of the Togolese Code of Criminal Procedure, which prohibits house searches and arrests between 6pm and 6am, except in cases strictly defined by law.
This arrest comes against a backdrop of increasing repression of dissident voices in Togo. Civil society figures such as the poet and cyber-activist Koffi H. Sitsopé Sokpor, alias ‘Affectio’, have also been arrested for taking positions critical of the government.
