Diplomacy: Mali and Ghana Redefine Their Relationship

On January 16, 2025, Malian Prime Minister Major General Abdoulaye Maïga embarked on a 48-hour official visit to Accra, Ghana, to strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations.

Upon his arrival at Kotoka International Airport, General Maïga was welcomed by the Honorable Marietta Brew Appiah-Opong, former Ghanaian Minister of Justice, and Prosper Douglas Bani, former Minister of the Interior.

During the visit, the Malian Prime Minister met with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama to discuss security cooperation in light of the growing jihadist violence in West Africa. President Mahama emphasized the importance of regional collaboration, stating: “Our security is a shared goal, and we must work together to ensure the safety of our sub-region.”

General Maïga delivered a special message from Malian President Assimi Goïta to President Mahama, reaffirming Mali’s commitment to pan-Africanism and African sovereignty. He expressed his gratitude for Ghana’s steadfast support, stating:

“The struggle for African sovereignty aligns with President Mahama’s vision. We thank him for Ghana’s unwavering support.”

This visit represents a significant milestone in strengthening ties between Mali and Ghana, particularly after the establishment of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) by Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger following their withdrawal from ECOWAS. President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s solidarity with Mali despite current challenges, declaring:

“Despite the temporary setbacks we face, we must continue to uphold strong relations. Ghana remains firmly in solidarity with Mali.”
